Lakeland History

Lakeland was founded in the 1880s, named for the many lakes that create a park-like atmosphere in the town. The town flourished after it was connected to local rail lines in the late 1800s. Downtown Lakeland today reflects the economic growth of the area in the early 20th century. Hotels, office buildings, museums, public spaces, and residential housing built during this period contribute to the vibrant downtown area. A downtown revitalization project in the 1970s restored the atmosphere of the city’s early economic and cultural hub.

Today, visitors and residents enjoy the interweaving of lakes, parks, and the built environment. Mirror Lake, part of the downtown scene, was voted one of the top 10 best public spaces in the U.S. After a fun day of exploring the many things to do in Lakeland, come to Bay Street Bistro for a relaxing evening to end your day.
